MPs lock horns over JS panel chairs

A deadlock emerged in the Jatiya Sangsad over the distribution of parliamentary standing committee chairmanships on August 30. The ruling party insisted that opposition MPs would only be granted chairmanships if they agreed to join the special committee on constitutional amendment, a condition the opposition rejected.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Syed Abdullah Mohammed Taher argued that while opposition lawmakers currently hold about 26 percent of committee memberships, they deserve a proportionate 26 percent share of chairmanships. He pointed out that the opposition has secured only one chairmanship so far, and none in ministry-related committees.

Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni countered that opposition chairs have historically been rare.

The standoff spilled into legislative process as opposition MPs boycotted deliberations on the National Human Rights Commission Bill. They accused the government of rushing the process and reducing the standing committee to a mere rubber stamp.

Bangladesh Bank records Tk 26,023 crore profit in FY26

Bangladesh Bank posted a record profit of Tk 26,023 crore in fiscal year 2025-26, marking a 15 percent year-on-year increase. The board of directors yesterday approved the central bank’s financial statements, underscoring its strongest earnings in recent years.

The bank reported a gross profit of Tk 35,016 crore against expenditures of Tk 8,993 crore, enabling a transfer of Tk 25,977 crore to the government treasury.

Central bank officials attributed the surge to higher interest income from lending to commercial banks and the government during the economic slowdown, coupled with steady returns from foreign exchange reserve investments.

The board also approved an incentive bonus equivalent to six months of basic salary for all employees.

Nation observes Day of Victims of Enforced Disappearances

Bangladesh on August 30 observed the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, with rights groups and families of victims renewing demands for justice over crimes committed under the previous administration. Holding nationwide programmes, they also called for strict and expedited punishment of perpetrators.

Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman disclosed that 1,855 cases have been filed across the country concerning killings and enforced disappearances during the previous regime. Investigations have been completed in 158 cases, with trial proceedings now underway.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s cabinet meanwhile gave final approval to the Prevention and Remedies for Enforced Disappearance Act, 2026. The legislation formally recognises enforced disappearance as a distinct criminal offence, punishable by life imprisonment.

Disputed claim emerges over Sagar-Runi murder investigation

Md Aminul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, claimed today that investigators uncovered preliminary evidence linking an unnamed cultural personality to the 2012 killings of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi. His remarks followed an earlier statement by another prosecutor, who suggested a clue had surfaced while probing a separate case.

However, Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), the agency leading the homicide probe, disputed the claim. Investigating officer Azizul Haque declined comment.

Another official directly involved in the inquiry said their team had received no such information and would seek clarification from the prosecution.

Dhaka and Beijing discuss strategic and economic cooperation
