Adani Power’s supply dropped from 1,400 MW to 800 MW

Electricity supply to Bangladesh from Adani Power’s Godda plant fell below 800MW on Thursday after a technical failure forced one generating unit to shut down. Before Unit-2 went offline at 11pm on 9 September, Adani was supplying around 1,430MW.

According to Power Grid Bangladesh data, supply dropped to an average of 748MW as the 800MW Unit-2 tripped due to a boiler defect, exacerbating a national generation deficit of 2,869MW. The shutdown intensified load shedding above 2,500MW as domestic gas and liquid fuel plants struggled to meet demand.

Bangladesh Power Development Board Member Md Zahurul Islam said a boiler feed pump within the unit's main water supply system overheated, prompting an automatic shutdown as a safety measure. 

BPDB officials said the generating unit requires several days to cool down before repair work can begin, estimating that complete restoration will take three to four days.

Adani Power attributed weeks of reduced supply to coal transportation disruptions caused by railway congestion, loading restrictions and excessive monsoon rainfall affecting thermal plants in eastern India. 

The company said it coordinated with the BPDB and Indian Railways to restore coal rakes, having moderated daytime generation to ensure adequate power during evening peak hours.

Two die of dengue, three more die with measles symptoms

Three more people died with measles symptoms, while two people died of dengue across Bangladesh in the 24 hours ending at 8 am Friday.

The nationwide surges in dengue and measles infections have claimed over 1,150 lives across Bangladesh, severely straining healthcare facilities as both diseases spread rapidly across all 64 districts.

According to Directorate General of Health Services data, 790 people were hospitalized within 24 hours. The annual dengue death toll rose to 141, leaving 3,434 patients undergoing hospital treatment. The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research identified 15 high-risk districts ahead of anticipated transmission peaks in October, while public health expert Dr Mushtuq Husain said sustained year-round vector management was necessary.

Concurrently, the health directorate reported that cumulative deaths from measles and measles-like symptoms reached 1,012 following three additional fatalities, comprising 912 suspected and 100 laboratory-confirmed cases since April. Another 1,077 symptomatic patients were recorded in 24 hours, raising total symptomatic infections to 169,822, alongside 19,967 confirmed cases, with Dhaka Division recording the highest regional casualty total at 408 deaths.

In response to the escalating health crisis, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman inaugurated a three-month nationwide dengue prevention and cleanliness campaign at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Saturday. The coordinated multi-ministerial programme mobilises 25,000 volunteers, municipal cleaners, and students across all 64 districts to carry out weekly sanitisation drives and eliminate stagnant breeding grounds through 12 December.

63 foreign nationals arrested in Chattogram for ‘online fraud’

63 foreign nationals were arrested from a residential building in the Khulshi area of Chattogram on Thursday night over alleged involvement in an international online fraud network.

The detainees, comprising 35 Laotian, 21 Pakistani, 5 Chinese, 1 Nepali and 1 Vietnamese national, were arrested without passports alongside 134 mobile phones and 57 laptops.

Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Mohammad Faisal Ahmed said the suspects relocated to Bangladesh to conduct fake employment and gambling scams following extensive regional crackdowns.

Authorities are initiating legal proceedings under the Cyber Security Act while searching for a Bangladeshi national believed to be holding the suspects' passports.

BGB foils BSF bid to push 10 to 12 people into Bangladesh

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) foiled an attempt by India's Border Security Force (BSF) to push 10 to 12 people into Bangladesh through the Satkhira border on Friday.

According to BGB sources, personnel from the Char Sahebkhali camp of India's 77 BSF Battalion attempted to cross the Kalindi River on a boat and a speedboat carrying the unidentified individuals amid heavy rain.

A regular patrol team from the Khurmi border outpost intercepted the vessels on a BGB speedboat, forcing the BSF personnel to return to Indian territory with the group.

Nildumur 17 BGB Battalion Commanding Officer Lt Col Khondaker Abu Sahl Abdullah said border forces would not allow any individual or group to enter Bangladeshi territory illegally.

Government reviewing 101 MoUs signed with India: Chief Whip

Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said on Friday that the government is reviewing 101 memorandums of understanding and agreements signed with India during the previous Awami League administration.

Addressing a post-session press briefing at the National Parliament, Moni said the ousted government previously established port agreements that allegedly granted foreign vessels preferential unloading treatment over Bangladeshi ships.

The chief whip said the government wants to maintain friendly relations with India while prioritising national interests, adding that authorities are seeking to resolve unequal infrastructure loan terms.

Moni also confirmed the passage of six legislative bills during the parliamentary session, alongside the repeal of indemnity laws regarding capacity charges for quick rental power plants.
