Dengue and viral fevers surge, hospitalisations cross 41,000

Multiple viral infections, including dengue, influenza, chikungunya and respiratory illnesses, are surging concurrently across Bangladesh, putting further strain on the already stretched healthcare facilities. 

The Directorate General of Health Services reported two new dengue fatalities in the past 24 hours, bringing the year's death toll to 113. During the same period, 988 patients were hospitalised, pushing the cumulative admissions to 41,032 this year. 

Dhaka South City Corporation recorded 149 new cases while Dhaka North City Corporation recorded 102. Besides, the Barishal Division recorded 170 new hospitalisations, while the Khulna Division recorded 163. 

Meanwhile, the Directorate General of Health Services also reported four more deaths among people with suspected measles symptoms in 24 hours, including one confirmed measles death. This brings the confirmed death toll to 100, while 891 others have died after showing measles symptoms. An additional 761 patients were admitted to hospitals with measles symptoms during this period, pushing total hospitalisations for the disease to 143,214 while 137,921 patients have been discharged.

Gun violence and murders escalate across Dhaka and outskirts

A spate of shootings, killings and other violent incidents was reported across the country over the past 24 hours.

A 40-year-old trader, Aslam Khan, was shot at his shop in Kadamtali on Saturday at around 8:30pm. In a separate incident, 38-year-old housewife Jasmine Begum was shot through the window of her home in Darussalam. Both were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while locals detained the suspected shooter in the Kadamtali incident.

In Savar's Aminbazar, a mob of 10 to 15 people beat 58-year-old Special Branch Sub-Inspector Altaf Hossain to death following a dispute over a parked car. His 26-year-old son was also attacked in the incident.

Meanwhile, police recovered three decomposed bodies, belonging to a man, a woman and a newborn, from a locked room in Ashulia's Jamgora area. Investigators suspect the three may have been victims of a premeditated murder.

In Demra, rickshaw driver Delwar Hossain (50), was beaten to death with a brick by an acquaintance during a dispute allegedly linked to drug abuse. In Chattogram, Md Mohsin (52), a leader of the local hijra community, was found dead at his home, with police suspecting that he had been strangled.

IGP criticises legal loopholes enabling repeat offenders' release

Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir said that legal loopholes routinely allow repeat drug offenders and muggers to secure rapid release after apprehension. 

Speaking at an event at Viqarunnisa Noon School & College in Dhaka on Saturday, the IGP said law enforcement brings criminals under the law multiple times, but statutory limitations prevent long-term detention, enabling them to return to the same offenses. 

Fakir also issued a warning to parents and educators regarding illicit narcotics, stating that drugs are increasingly being disguised and marketed to urban youth under names such as "energy tablets". 

Addressing the limitations of the force, the police chief noted that the numerical ratio of officers to the population remains insufficient. He urged the public to actively participate in community policing and provide intelligence to help combat urban crime.

PM outlines 'Bangladesh First' foreign policy, apologises for power crisis

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will introduce a "Bangladesh First" foreign policy doctrine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in New York, marking his first international address as head of government. 

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said on Saturday that the delegation will focus on presenting Bangladesh as a destination for foreign direct investment rather than a country defined by natural disasters. 

The prime minister will also participate in a dedicated UN session on Rohingya repatriation, while Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman will formally preside over the General Assembly. 

In Dhaka, addressing the BNP's 48th founding anniversary on Saturday, Tarique Rahman issued a formal apology to citizens and industry owners suffering from ongoing electricity and fuel shortages. He attributed the systemic crises to the economy inherited from the previous authoritarian and interim administrations. 

He also issued a strict warning against exploiting the energy crisis to generate instability. Questioning whether elements of the ousted autocracy were operating behind the scenes, he said anyone attempting to create anarchy would face legal action, urging all political factions to "remain within the limit".

Jamaat-led alliance launches Dhaka-Chattogram march, issues ultimatum

The Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance’s Dhaka-Chattogram long march ended on Saturday, presenting a six-point charter of demands to the ruling government. 

The convoy, involving an estimated 1,000 vehicles, departed Dhaka's Shapla Chattar and held highway rallies in Narayanganj, Cumilla, and Feni before culminating at Chattogram's Laldighi Maidan. 

The alliance demanded the immediate implementation of the 12 February referendum mandate, trials for the July 2024 killings, and immediate resolutions to acute national shortages of electricity, gas, and fertiliser. 

Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman accused the administration of deceiving the electorate, while Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar warned that the public holds a "red card" they will soon show the government. Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam said the administration would not survive in office if basic utility and governance demands remain unmet.
