Saima Wazed resigns from WHO amid fraud investigations

Saima Wazed resigned from her post as the South-East Asia Regional Director of the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday as joint investigations were conducted against her over alleged financial fraud, forgery and academic misrepresentation.

After her resignation, WHO and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) investigated her official travel expenses to China, academic credentials and land acquisition in Bangladesh.

Wazed denied all allegations and said the travel expense discrepancies stemmed from staff administrative errors, adding that she lost confidence in the leadership after nearly a year on unpaid leave.

The WHO has not issued an official statement confirming the resignation, while authorities continue overseeing regional operations during the annual committee session in Dili, Timor-Leste.

Rumeen Farhana sparks parliament uproar after criticising ruling BNP

Independent MP Rumeen Farhana sparked an uproar in parliament on Wednesday after criticising the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) over corruption, power shortages and defaulted loans.

The BNP lawmakers shouted in protest as Farhana said the party historically oversaw severe fertiliser shortages and over Tk 6 lakh crore in bad loans. She also said the BNP members subjected her to verbal abuse after authorities switched off her microphone.

While trying to restore order, Deputy Speaker Kaysar Kamal said that democratic norms were disrupted by breaching speeches. On the other hand, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said that lawmakers must remain mindful of their remarks.

Following this event, the parliament passed the Bank Resolution Bill with ruling party votes as opposition lawmakers remained silent and Farhana walked out of the chamber.

Iran reports coastal projectile strikes as oil breaches $100

Multiple enemy projectiles hit several areas across Iran's coastal region, causing explosions in Sirik, Minab County, and Qeshm Island, according to Iranian state media.

The attacks followed the mutual military escalation as the United States struck five Iranian oil tankers on September 8. After which, Tehran targeted American military aircraft at Jordan's Al Azraq airbase.

Amid the hostilities, preliminary ship-tracking data indicated vessel transits through the Strait of Hormuz dropped to seven on Wednesday, falling below the 10-day average of 14.

The conflict pushed Brent crude prices above $100 a barrel for the first time since July, disrupting European stock markets and raising investor concerns regarding global inflation and potential interest-rate hikes.

Measles outbreak pushes national death toll past 1,000

A combined death toll of 1,002 from confirmed and suspected measles cases was recorded on Wednesday amid an ongoing nationwide outbreak.

According to Directorate General of Health Services data, 100 fatalities were confirmed as measles while 902 remained suspected, with total infections reaching 1.87 lakh since 15 March.

Public health expert Dr Mushtaq Hossain attributed the crisis to the interim government's negligence, saying an emergency vaccination campaign between April and May excluded nearly 40 lakh children.

Former IEDCR director Mahmudur Rahman said the disease no longer appeared to be a government priority, as 5,574 patients remain hospitalised nationwide.

Cabinet Division bars honorifics before top government titles

The government barred the use of "His Excellency", "Honourable" and all other honorific expressions before senior official titles across all formal communications and written documents on Wednesday.

According to a Cabinet Division circular, the restriction applies specifically to the president, prime minister, ministers, state ministers and deputy ministers. The directive requires officials to omit the honorifics in written form during official correspondence and when presenting document summaries.

Classifying the administrative decision as highly important, the division instructed all government ministries, divisions and their subordinate offices to implement the regulatory changes immediately.
