Govt outlines 150-well drilling plan, Tk 6,000cr loan

The government announced a strategic plan to address acute power and gas shortages, including a 150-well drilling programme and emergency funding for fuel procurement.

Electricity imports from India's Adani plant fell to 900MW during the day and 1,100MW at night, down from the standard 1,500-1,600MW. The company attributed the reduction to natural disasters.

To offset the generation deficit, the government issued a Tk 6,000 crore interest-free loan to the Bangladesh Power Development Board to procure furnace oil, targeting 4,000MW of generation.

Energy Division Secretary Mohammad Saiful Islam said that domestic extraction, LNG capacity, deep drilling, and exploration would be expanded under a coordinated approach.

The report read that the immediate test for struggling households and industries will come after 15 September.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman told Parliament on Wednesday that the government has undertaken a programme to drill and work over 150 wells, and plans to advance drilling activities for 100 wells by 2028. Thirty completed wells have already added 140 mmcfd to the national grid, while seven ongoing projects expect to yield another 85 mmcfd. The government also introduced a three-year incentive purchasing surplus rooftop solar electricity at Tk 10.15 per unit.

Jamaat-led alliance begins Dhaka-Chattogram long march

An 11-party opposition alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami began a Dhaka-Chattogram long march today to press a six-point demand.

The convoy departed Shapla Chattar in Dhaka around 8:30 am, following an inaugural rally. Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said the movement would continue until the rights of 180 million people are established, noting that citizens are suffering from severe gas, electricity and water shortages while still paying bills. The demands notably include implementing the people's verdict in the February 12 referendum, holding trials for the July 2024 mass killings, and resolving the ongoing utility crises.

Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam warned that if the government obstructs the long march, the alliance's six-point demand will become a single-point demand.

Alliance leaders announced they would restrict the convoy, which expects up to 1,500 vehicles, to one side of the highway to minimize traffic disruption, and held separate meetings with police authorities to ensure order. Roadside rallies are scheduled in Narayanganj, Cumilla, Feni, and Mirsarai before concluding at Chattogram's Laldighi Maidan. The alliance also announced future regional marches to Rangpur, Khulna and Sylhet over the coming months.

Water Resources Minister Md Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee previously questioned the alliance's motives, arguing that the six-month tenure of the current administration is insufficient to complete all development work, specifically highlighting the ongoing re-excavation of 20,000 kilometres of canals.

Dengue hospitalisations surpass 40,000

Bangladesh recorded 512 new dengue hospitalisations in a 24-hour period, bringing the total number of cases in 2026 to 40,044.

According to data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the Dhaka Division accounted for 280 of the new admissions, followed by the Chattogram Division with 109 cases and the Khulna Division with 72 cases.

No new fatalities were reported during the 24-hour window, leaving the national death toll from the mosquito-borne viral infection at 111 for the year.

The DGHS data shows that 726 patients were discharged during the same period. A total of 37,193 individuals have recovered from the disease this year.

State minister injured, woman killed in Bogura crash

State Minister for Public Administration and Food Md Abdul Bari and a 55-year-old woman were injured in a road accident in Bogura's Shibganj yesterday morning while the minister was travelling from Dhaka to his Joypurhat-2 constituency. The woman, identified as Firoza Begum, subsequently died.

Kalai Police Station Officer-in-Charge Saidul Alam said the minister received primary treatment in Kalai before being admitted to the Joypurhat 400-Bed General Hospital.

Medical Superintendent Dr Rashed Mobarak Jewel said that the minister sustained chest and bilateral shoulder injuries but was now out of danger. Following his hospital admission, doctors decided to refer the state minister to Dhaka for advanced medical care.

US may hit Iran's Pickaxe Mountain soon, Trump says

United States President Donald Trump told reporters on Friday that the US military may strike Iran's Pickaxe Mountain facility very soon.

A Reuters report noted that Pickaxe Mountain, located near the heavily damaged Natanz uranium enrichment facility, is a heavily fortified site hosting two deeply buried tunnel complexes.

Providing additional context on the facility, the Global Banking & Finance Review cited expert analysis indicating that satellite imagery shows extensive fortifications at the site. These defenses reportedly include hardened tunnel entrances, double security perimeters, and possible ventilation shafts extending hundreds of metres underground.

The publication noted that these extreme depths make airstrikes particularly difficult, raising questions about whether the US possesses munitions capable of penetrating the facility and what strategic alternatives might be considered amid the heightened tensions.
