PM calls for global unity against enforced disappearances

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman on Saturday called for global unity and solidarity for holding trials of those involved in enforced disappearances, issuing a message to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances.

He stated that the Prevention and Remedy of Enforced Disappearance Bill, 2026, has been placed in parliament to establish a legal framework to stop such crimes.

Meanwhile, the premier also handed over government job appointment letters to 74 family members of victims of enforced disappearances and the recent July mass uprising.

Nepal-Tibet death toll hits 682; 3,000 missing

The death toll from catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-China border has climbed to 682, with 3,044 people still missing as authorities warn rescue teams of rising waters.

Triggered by a massive glacial collapse, the disaster has left nearly 3,000 unaccounted for -- including 2,426 in Nepal and 554 in Tibet, according to official figures. Among the missing are at least 777 foreign nationals and 933 hydropower workers.

The floods destroyed major hydropower stations and swept away settlements along the Trishuli River corridor. Nepal’s Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle estimated rebuilding costs at $4-5 billion. Bad weather continues to hamper rescue operations, prompting Kathmandu to seek specialised foreign technical assistance.

Government announces cash rewards for recovery of looted weapons

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has announced the formation of a special law enforcement unit tasked with recovering illegal and looted weapons across the country.

To accelerate the recovery process, the government is offering cash rewards ranging from Tk 10,000 to Tk 200,000 for verified intelligence. Rewards of up to Tk 200,000 are designated for information on heavy weapons, Tk 50,000 for firearms such as pistols and shotguns, and up to Tk 20,000 for items including sound grenades and tear gas shells.

The minister said that nationwide operations are currently underway and legal cases have been filed against individuals who failed to surrender their firearms after their civilian licences were officially cancelled.

Headteacher dies after falling from rickshaw during mugging attempt near parliament

A primary school headteacher from Bogura died after falling from a moving rickshaw during a mugging attempt near the South Plaza of the National Parliament building in Dhaka early Saturday. The victim, Ranjila Parvin, 55, headteacher of Bagbari Girls’ Government Primary School in Gabtali upazila, had travelled overnight to Dhaka with her husband for a medical appointment.

Around 6:00am, as the couple rode a rickshaw toward the hospital in Farmgate area, motorcycle‑riding muggers pulled her bag, causing her to fall and suffer severe head injuries. She was declared dead upon arrival at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. Dhaka Metropolitan Police's Tejgaon Division said that a murder case is being filed and operations are underway to arrest the suspects.

Rangpur civic body raises 19 questions police narrative in Chakraborty murders

The Rangpur City Nagorik Committee, a civil society group, has challenged the police account of the killings of retired teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and his family, raising 19 specific questions.
