Prime Minister Tarique Rahman returned to Dhaka on Sunday morning following a five-day visit to New York for the 81st UNGA session.

An Emirates flight carrying the prime minister and his entourage landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 8:21 AM, Deputy Press Secretary Hasan Shiplu said.

Senior cabinet members and government officials received the delegation upon arrival, including Local Government Minister Abdul Moyeen Khan and Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani.

The premier departed Dhaka on 21 September, completing transit stops in Istanbul and Dubai during the overseas journey.

During four working days in New York, Tarique participated in 30 official engagements, comprising 11 bilateral meetings with foreign governments and delivering seven addresses. Bilateral talks included discussions with heads of state from seven nations, including Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

In his address to the UN General Debate, the prime minister presented a national recovery strategy and proposed measures for Rohingya repatriation.

Economic diplomacy featured meetings with World Bank President Ajay Banga, discussions with Wall Street investors and a commercial aircraft agreement between Biman and Boeing.

Two held over vandalism of Salman Muqtadir's studio

An armed group attacked, vandalised and looted content creator Salman Mohammad Muqtadir's BrownFish Studio near Dhaka's ECB Chattar on Saturday night.

According to local witnesses, the assault occurred after the commercial property landowner refused to pay extortion allegedly demanded by the local BNP activists.

Around 150 attackers broke into the facility, destroyed 29 surveillance cameras, held two caretakers at gunpoint, and looted client video footage.

Cantonment police station chief Muhammad Gias Uddin said officers detained two armed suspects at the scene, while Salman said he would pursue legal action.

National Citizen Party Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary said criminal elements attacked the facility because of extortion refusal, despite Salman supporting student demonstrators during the July uprising.

Patwary said the citizens did not revolt against one oppressor only to face subjugation under another faction.

Dhaka University Central Students' Union leader Shadik Kayem said ruling party activists created a climate of fear through extortion and land grabbing.

Kayem added that authorities must rein in partisan actors behaving like feudal landlords, asserting that citizens will not allow the nation to become a private estate.

Radda Centre demolition: DMP forms committee to probe police negligence

Photo: Dhaka Tribune

A three-member committee was formed to inquire into police negligence following the overnight demolition of the Radda healthcare centre in Mirpur.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed ordered the committee to identify whether responding officers delayed action.

The inquiry followed security camera footage showing looters loading clinic property onto pickup vans while a police vehicle remained parked outside. Officers stayed inside without intervening as armed assailants removed equipment valued at Tk 1.5 crore.

Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman said the attack deprived low-income families of healthcare. Authorities must stop political shielding, identify the orchestrators behind the destruction and ensure judicial punishment for the culprits.

National Citizen Party Convener Nahid Islam said police inaction reflected fragile public security. He demanded immediate arrests.

Despite the destruction, clinic staff erected a temporary tarpaulin outside the gate to conduct the government measles-rubella vaccination campaign.

Health workers administered vaccines to 21 children in the street, maintaining immunisation services while clinical testing remained suspended.

Ousted fascist forces will never be allowed to conduct politics: Salahuddin Ahmed

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said ousted fascist forces would never be allowed to conduct politics in Bangladesh again.

Addressing a rally at Dholaikhal on Saturday, he said individuals responsible for enforced disappearances and killings over the past 17 years would face trial.

Bangladesh officially sought the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India under the bilateral treaty, though New Delhi has yet to respond, the minister said, adding that the government wanted her returned to face fair trials adhering to international standards.

Salahuddin criticised opposition groups for launching a one-point movement to topple the administration within seven months of taking office.

He said opposition parties avoided the constitutional reform committee to stage street marches, adding that citizens will never invite anti-independence forces back.

Addressing economic concerns, the home minister said recent fuel price adjustments reflected international market increases and cross-border smuggling risks. He expressed regret over public suffering, promising that the government will reduce domestic fuel prices proportionately whenever global energy costs decline.

Iran pursues diplomacy after Trump rejects seven-day peace proposal

Iran maintained that only diplomacy can resolve regional hostilities after United States President Donald Trump said he rejected Tehran's seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on social media that reopening hinges on agreed conditions.

Araqchi said Qatari mediators had not officially conveyed an American rejection, while Trump said Iranian desperation drove the proposal. Internal reports indicated Trump remained sceptical of the offer, telling White House staff that renewed military strikes appeared probable following congressional elections.

A senior Iranian official said Tehran will show no flexibility regarding its nuclear programme or uranium enrichment activities under any agreement. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a television interview that his administration remains prepared for discussions but will not accept coercion.

The seven-month conflict, triggered by initial strikes on 28 February, continues to disrupt maritime traffic through critical global shipping lanes. Regional security risks persisted as a Saudi-led military coalition said it intercepted two ballistic missiles and two drones launched towards the kingdom on Saturday.
