The Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) sought Malaysian support to expand exports across ASEAN during business forums held in Kuala Lumpur on 25 and 26 September.
DCCI President Taskeen Ahmed urged Malaysian firms to invest directly in Bangladesh.
Speaking at a forum organised by the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Malaysia, Taskeen proposed boosting exports of garments, pharmaceuticals, electronics and jute goods. He said investors could use Bangladesh as a regional production base to access South Asian consumer markets.
NCCIM President Norsyahrin bin Hamidon said greater commercial engagement would expand bilateral trade across Bangladesh's growing consumer market. Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers President Jacob Lee Chor Kok said closer private-sector collaboration and Bangladeshi workforce contributions remain vital to shared industrial growth.
During the visit, DCCI and FMM signed a memorandum of understanding to strengthen trade ties. Participating entrepreneurs from both countries conducted around 70 business-to-business matchmaking sessions, exchanging commercial data and exploring new investment opportunities across various sectors.

Bangladesh Parjatan Corporation (BPC) proposed 60 tourism development projects costing Tk 19,090 crore on Sunday to upgrade nationwide travel infrastructure.
The initiative prioritises key sites from a master plan prepared by the Bangladesh Tourism Board, covering 1,498 potential destinations nationwide.
Regional allocations designate Tk 5,980 crore for nine projects in Chattogram and Cox's Bazar, marking the largest regional share. Planners allocated Tk 3,540 crore for coastal destinations, Tk 3,460 crore for Sylhet and Tk 2,900 crore for infrastructure around Dhaka.
BPC Chairman Md Shamimuzzaman said the investments will build necessary infrastructure to expand national economic earnings. BPC General Manager Md Ziaul Haque Howlader said funding will combine state allocations, private capital and public-private partnerships rather than relying solely on the government.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism forwarded the proposal to the Planning Ministry for approval. Officials said the framework supports modernising 53 state-owned properties, including redeveloping Hotel Shaibal in Cox's Bazar across 132 acres into an international tourism complex.

Bangladesh's ready-made garment exports to the United Kingdom reached $915.63 million during July and August of fiscal year 2026-27, registering a 3.74 per cent year-on-year growth. The shipment increase was driven primarily by a robust export rebound during August.
According to Export Promotion Bureau data compiled by Bangladesh Apparel Voice, apparel exports stood at $882.62 million during the same period last year. The two-month total accounts for 20.86 per cent of the $4,388.55 million earned from UK shipments across the entire previous fiscal year.
The average monthly export volume reached $457.82 million, surpassing the monthly benchmark of $365.71 million recorded throughout fiscal year 2025-26. A 10.53 per cent surge in August effectively offset a 2.44 per cent year-on-year contraction recorded during the opening month of July.
Bangladesh Apparel Voice Founder and Chief Executive Officer Mohiuddin Rubel said August's trade recovery lifted apparel shipments to the British market out of negative territory. He said the performance reversed the initial slowdown, establishing positive export momentum for the ongoing fiscal period.
Bankers demand consultation over classified loan exit facility

Bankers, economists and business leaders demanded wider consultation on Saturday before Bangladesh Bank issues a major regulatory circular regarding a proposed special exit facility for classified loans.
Participants said rushed implementation could undermine financial recovery efforts and business sustainability.
The call came during a roundtable organised by the International Business Forum of Bangladesh in Dhaka. A keynote paper presented by Bangladesh Institute of Bank Management professor Shah Md Ahsan Habib outlined the proposed facility, stressing the need to maintain credit discipline.
Bank Asia PLC adviser Ali Reza Iftekhar said engaging stakeholders before issuing significant circulars remains essential to prevent unintended banking sector consequences. Former BIBM director general Toufic Ahmad Choudhury urged authorities to adopt a case-by-case approach separating wilful defaulters from unwilling ones.
Sector leaders agreed that balancing non-performing loan recovery with repayment capacity requires closer institutional coordination between the central bank and the finance ministry. The dialogue concluded by appealing to develop practical approaches tackling the bad loan crisis.
ADB approves $100 million loan for affordable housing

The Asian Development Bank approved a $100 million concessional loan on Sunday to expand affordable housing finance for vulnerable borrowers in Bangladesh. Channelled through Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation and partner microfinance lenders, the initiative provides collateral-free credit to help families build and repair homes.
The financing package includes $40 million from climate adaptation funds alongside $600,000 in technical grants. The initiative addresses severe housing shortages for informal earners excluded from conventional mortgages, incorporating resilient construction standards to protect homes against flooding, cyclones and extreme heat.
ADB Country Director for Bangladesh Qingfeng Zhang said housing serves as a critical foundation for dignity and resilience. Zhang said helping low-income families and women secure safer homes advances national goals of reducing poverty, strengthening social protection and fostering inclusive economic growth.
By 2031, the project is scheduled to assist 40,000 households, targeting at least 32,000 women and 24,000 hazard-prone residents. The programme will enhance female land rights through legal residency documentation while improving digital risk systems across participating microfinance institutions.
